  • Can a single model describe media across Central and Eastern Europe? Castro Herrero et al. (2017) test Hallin and Mancini’s framework and find that the region does not have just one media system, but rather splits into three distinct groups.

The authors set out to test and expand Hallin and Mancini’s comparison model to identify real-world types of media systems across the region. To do this, they analyzed combined data from 11 countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Their study shows that political parallelism and public service broadcasting work well as measures for comparison. At the same time, press freedom and foreign ownership highlight meaningful differences between national media systems. Finally, through a cluster analysis, Castro Herrero et al. uncovered three separate groups of media systems, providing clear evidence that there is no single East-Central European media model.
